To do a visit to the Palace of Versaille justice, plan to be there all day, and wear comfortable shoes! There is no better example of the opulence that once reigned in France than the Versaille complex. For example, the first thing you must do is enter the golden gates.
Once inside, the sheer size of the complex will leave you speechless! It is so big, in fact, that a regular camera lens can barely capture its entire width.
The magnificent palace was a hunting lodge under the reign of Louis XIII until his son (Louis XIV) took over the throne and made great modifications to it. He eventually moved the entire French government to Versaille where it remained until 1789.
Inside, you will see the Grand Apartments of the King and Queen that include the infamous Hall of Mirrors. It was here that the king crowed his royal power to visitors.
The Chapel was added a century later under Louis XV.
Once you've made your way through the palace, you find yourself in the biggest backyard you will ever see, the gardens. The fountains, the flower beds, the ornate shrubbery, the statues and the canal where previously only woods and grasslands. If you've spent any time landscaping or mowing a lawn, you can appreciate the enormity of this project!
As if all of this wasn't enough for the royal family, they also built the Grand Trianon (the king's 'retreat' for he and his mistress) and the Petit Trianon (Marie-Antoinette's private retreat and garden).

How To Get There
Versailles is an actual town, a suburb located a little more than 12 miles outside of Paris. Taking the train (RER C - yellow line) is an easy and inexpensive way to get there. You want to get off at the last stop, Versailles Rive Gauche. The palace is a 5-minute walk from the station.
