Before heading to Puglia, I spent a few days on the Amalfi Coast. A little further south you will find farms raising large creatures like the ones pictured below.
What are they? Buffalo. The milk from buffalo is used to make Mozzarella di Bufala (mozzarella cheese).
I've seen many pictures and paintings of the area since arriving, but not one includes a single buffalo. It's easy to see how herds of these creatures might be considered a unique find in Italy.
