Located on a hilltop in the Chianti Classico area (near Greve), Castello di Verrazzano began as an etruscan and later a Roman settlement before becoming the property of the Verranzzano family in the 7th century. The castle is known for being the birthplace of the celebrated navigator and discoverer of the bay of New York, Giovanni da Verrazzano.
The ancient cellars date back to the 16th century. Visits to the winery take you through the historic cellars and the gardens of the villa, concluding with a guided tasting of the estate's wines, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and lunch (if you choose).
Castello di Verrazzano is about 30 minutes south of Florence. The drive is nothing short of scenic beauty.
