Strasbourg doesn't lack for a restaurant scene, so for only one night in town I wanted to pick the right one for traditional food and local atmosphere. I'm so glad I chose Winstub S'Kaechele!
Set in stone walls and timbered ceilings, you feel as though you are stepping back in time. Add to that a small dining room of only 9 tables and it's as if you are coming together for a feast with family and friends.
But let me get to the point...the food. Oh my, c'etait excellent! The menu consists of standards like beef cheeks, pork knuckle, and cordon bleu -- all popular with the locals from the orders I saw coming from the kitchen. The standouts at my table were the pumpkin soup with smoked duck (do I dare say I was tempted to ask for the entire pot!), escargot (I'm told they were outstanding--I have yet muster up enough umph to try something that slimes its way across the ground!) and the special of the night, venison that fell apart with the lightest touch of a fork.
The evening was made even more special by the welcoming and charming proprietor Karine. She graciously managed the door, served the food, cleared the tables as well as made time to speak with each guest as if they were a member of her family.
Winstub S'Kaechele will be at the top of my list in a return visit to Strasbourg.
