Even if you aren't much of an outdoor enthusiast, Vintgar Gorge is a must when traveling through Slovenia. It is a great half-day trip from Lake Bled (another popular tourist stop).
The gorge was completely impassable until it was discovered in 1891. It was given the name Vintgar, meaning "wine garden," because of vineyards that once were nearby.
Vintgar Gorge is about a mile long and easily accessible with paths and wooden walkways. Some areas get quite narrow, making it difficult to pass oncoming hikers. Around every corner is a pleasant surprise ranging from roaring rapids to peaceful emerald green pools filled with fish trying to escape the inevitable waterfalls.
I was told the pathway can get quite crowded during the peak tourist season. Fortunately for me, it was off-season and I enjoyed much of the walk without encountering a soul. It was an enjoyable one-with-nature kind of experience.
Entrance into the gorge is €4. Wear comfortable skid-proof shoes, and a light waterproof jacket if getting a little damp is a concern--this may not be an issue in July, but in late October we experienced mist and dripping condensation.
