If you drive for more than five minutes without seeing a waterfall in Iceland, you must be driving with your eyes closed! I'm not kidding. Some waterfalls are more known due to their proximity on the tourist route. Others are fabulous finds off the beaten path. One thing is for sure, if waterfalls are your thing, you will not be disappointed.
Here were some of my favorites:
The Gullfoss (Golden) Waterfall is found on the Golden Circle. It is fed by Iceland´s second biggest glacier, the Langjökull. We walked the entire wooden-planked boardwalk on the upper and lower levels for a view from every angle. Word of warning: wear rain gear. You will get wet from the mist.
Seljalandsfoss waterfall is spectacular on it's own, but becomes even more fabulous when you walk the path that leads you behind the waterfall for 360° angle views. Rain gear and non-skid shoes are a must for this visit.
Gljúfrabúi was a surprise find hidden inside a gorge a few feet away from the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall. It was a bit tricky using large rocks in the stream as stepping stones to enter the gorge, but it was well worth it!
Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland and you can walk right up to it if you are willing to get wet. Another option is to climb the 527 steps to an observation platform above the waterfall. While a bit taxing to do (even very fit looking young people were huffing and puffing!), it is well worth the energy spent for the magnificent views.
If these aren't enough to ooh and aah over, then here are a few random falls found while driving the Ring Road:
