After discovering wonderful B&B's in Amsterdam, I decided to keep the trend going and book a B&B for our 3-day jaunt to Bruges. Many were already booked, so I gambled with the only room I found available at Alegria. And, I'm glad I did!
Alegria feels more like a boutique hotel than a B&B. Here, a reception desk awaits you for check-in, shopping is a step away in a hat, scarf, and purse boutique, and a beautiful dining room and garden is readily available for breakfast.
We stayed in the Red room. It was a spacious room with an en suite bathroom including a walk-in shower, towels, hair dryer and bath soap. The Red room overlooks the street below--great for taking in the sites and sounds of the town. Oh, and the best part? Free Wi-Fi!
Breakfast is included in the room price and provides the standard European treats: fresh bakery goods, salami, cheese, fruit, cereal, coffee, tea, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. The real surprise came when hot eggs were offered prepared to our liking (scrambled, of course!).
Every detail is carefully managed by Veronique, the owner. Not only friendly and entertaining, Veronique makes you feel pampered and comfortable. I was especially touched when Veronique learned of our early morning departure. Concerned we would leave hungry, she rose early to make us breakfast. The only other person I know who would do that is my mother!
Alegria is ideally located for getting around Bruges on foot. The Red room is ideal for two people plus a child. Please note, however, that the street below can be noisy at night. That may not be a problem in colder months when windows are shut, but it was for us on warmer evenings with the windows open.
